Why Women of ALPFA

Women of ALPFA recognizes that Latinas have two sure things going for them: they are women and they are Hispanic. Sometimes, unfortunately, this is a double edged sword and gender and ethnicity get in the way of recognizing an individual for who she is and what she is capable of.

Women of ALPFA (WOA) is a platform for Latinas to be recognized for who they are and for what they do, helping them jump to higher grounds, be it into a first job or into a boardroom. WOA supports professional Latinas by being true to its mission of providing career development opportunities, further education and a solid network of other professionals that encourage, challenge and inspire them. WOA is an opportunity in itself, through its committee, to participate in the exciting process of helping Latinas reach excellence and of reaching it oneself.

WOA also seeks to help professional Latinas successfully incorporate themselves in the workforce, while maintaining pride for who they are, which is a direct result of where they come from. One of the most important qualities attributed to working Latinas is their heritage. Studies of American businesses have shown that this heritage results in executive Latinas displaying an impressive work ethic, aptitude for collaboration, cultural fluency and community outreach.

WOA is not only for Latinas, it is for anyone who recognizes the value of Latinas in the American workforce and wants to help them continue to add value to corporations and to the economy through their businesses, as well as through their purchasing power.

Supporting Career Advancement Strategies for Professional Latinas in ALPFA

To get promoted within their organizations Latinas have to rise above a number of barriers and maneuver their way to success. One of the most frequently cited barriers is the lack of a network and company role models who are Latinas. Latinas are usually not connected to influential power brokers and often lack the knowledge on how to succeed in organizational structures.

Women of ALPFA Network Membership

The Women of ALPFA network is open to all paid members of ALPFA. The network seeks individuals who share the spirit of networking and are committed to supporting the professional advancement of other Latinas. A strong demonstration of ALPFA involvement is alsodesired.

Women of ALPFA/ El Mundo Survey

Latina Professionals and Politics...

According to the PEW Hispanic Research Center there are more than 14 million Latinas in the United States, 12% of which are professional.As the country prepares for new leadership, The Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting (ALPFA), Boston Chapter set out to begin to identify how politically engaged these professional Latinas were.

With this in mind, the Women of ALPFA entered into a unique and unprecedented partnership with El Mundo Newspaper,in conducting a first of its kind local political survey. Three hundred forty seven professional women of Latin American origin, mostly from the New England region participated.
